Calling All Rails-Savvy Designers

Posted by Mike Gunderloy February 03, 2009 @ 12:58 PM

One thing that has been a continuing challenge for many Rails developers is finding a good designer to work with. There are certainly plenty of fantastic designers out there, but it’s often difficult to find one who is comfortable working directly in a Rails project.

In an effort to help ease this challenge, and at the behest of some interested developers and designers, the Rails Activists have set up a group for Ruby Graphics Designers. The idea is to have a place for communication: a spot where designers can ask questions about git or erb, or where developers can try to find a designer to work with.

Of course, a group without participation is nothing to crow about. If you’re a developer – or especially if you’re a designer who works with Rails – we’d love to have your participation. If you’re interested in the visual design and information architecture of Rails applications, c’mon by and say hi! And if you have other ideas about how we can encourage closer collaboration between the Rails community and the design community, we’d love to hear them.

    Nice idea!

it’s for a reason that i saw like 200 sites copy the rubyonrails.org design. :) there is such a think as a “Rails application Design”..

    This is a great idea.

As a designer that truly admires great programmers and thinks Rails is the best thing on the web in years, a better way for designers and programmers to work together sounds good.

    That’s great.

I’ve been working with Rails programmers for like 7 months now. It was my first real contact with the framework and with version control systems, and I’m loving it.

As a designer who had only heard about PHP before, I think it was (and still is!) a bit tough for them to teach me how everything works.

    Thanks for the initiative :)

Yeah, this is great. I am a designer for a consulting shop in Phoenix – http://integrumtech.com. We hosted ‘Merb Class’ a couple weeks ago with Yehuda Katz and Matt Aimonetti, we talk about this subject, and how awesome it is to have designers that can make their way through erb and controllers.

I am really excited about this group, and I hope it can grow so we can get some more Rails-Savvy Designers out there.

Great, I’m glad you guys like the idea.

One of our goals as Activists is to enhance communication. I have to admit that until now, we did not really spend too much time communicating with designers, but things are changing :)
