RailsWay - German Rails Magazine

Posted by Gregg Pollack December 10, 2008 @ 04:08 PM

If you can read German and you develop with Rails you’ll be happy to know that it republik, the same company that also produces a Java, .NET, and PHP magazine, is about to release a Ruby on Rails Magazine called RailsWay.

The magazine is in print and will be out in Germany, Switzerland and Austria by December 17, 2008. For 2009 they plan to release six issues (in the German language), and I hear they’re planning on an English version, but no ETA on that. The content of the first issue includes:

  • Getting started with Ruby on Rails
  • AJAX and Rails
  • RAILS 2.2 – what’s new
  • IDE’s for RAILS
  • Behaviour Driven Development
  • Metaprogramming With RUBY
  • RESTFull Web Services
  • Featured Website: Qype.com
  • Tips, Tricks, Performance & Security

A DVD comes with the magazine which includes tutorials, videos, free rails books, and a bunch of IDEs. The Editor in Chief is Michael Johann, who has done a great deal to promote Rails in Germany.

    way to rip off the a well known book’s title to gain a brand following…

    Nice initiative (maybe also from commercial standpoint..). Anyway I’m dubious about a magazine about a framwork, maybe a wider “audiece” (Ruby, Merb, interesting gems, ruby outside the web field…) could be more interesting… I’m waiting for similar initiatives in any major country…

    art, perhaps you’ve seen http://therailsway.com also? :)

    Yeah, I actually had the same gut reaction when I saw the title (the book and blog). I’m not involved with the Magazine so I can’t comment on why that name was chosen.

    It’s a common phrase that something is the “Rails Way” of doing something, so perhaps it’s not surprising people used it for common titles.

    Michael Johann? Never heard of!

    I could think of others who were more active in promoting Rails in Germany.

    @observer: you are right

    i also wondered, michael who? and asked everybody in the office and got the same response…

    There is the publisher and there is the Editor. The Editor ist responsible for the content. The publisher for the Marketing. Different countries have different meaninge of brands. The goal is to leverage rails not to be the most reknown Rails promoter in germany. ;-) So, please help getting Rails into the heads.

    Hi,

    This is very good news. I think the English version of the magazine would be more effective, as English readership is much higher than Germans.

    If there is a request section available for the magazine, i would like to request there.

    Good News, but English readers are neglected thats the biggest drawback. They should consider it as soon as possible.

    Perhaps “Way” means something different in German? I mean, you wouldn’t use an English title for a German publication, right?

  10. Gert Thiel on 11 Dec 05:58:

    @Peter Cooper

    RailsWay is English. The German translation for “way” is “Weg”.

    @SoftMind

    I don’t agree at all. Even the smallest minority is a ‘valid audience’.

    BTW, I think focusing on English only is the cause why Rails doesn’t become as popular as it could.

    Well, i think is all about business. A rails magazine is great for promoting rails (and i hope ruby), but on the first hand its for making money. In Germany a lot of people started programming by buying programming magazine. And maybe RailsWay is going to be a starting point for new rails/ruby users (at the moment Germany is more php country).

    For me, i would like to see a magazine for ruby professionals with articles about trends in ruby, ruby frameworks and interessting gems. And maybe a interview series with interesting people from the ruby/rails community, somthing like Gregg Pollack or Chris Matthieu (rubyology) is doing it.

    Do i have a christmas wish for free?

    The publisher is well-known and successful in Germany (they also publish “JavaMagazin”), I think it’s great they publish it – regardless of the title. Kudos to Michael for convincing them to take this risk – no small feat at all.

    (I’m obviously biased, BTW, since I contributed an article.)

    @Softmind:

    German initiative, german Publisher, german authors: => german magazine.

    There is far too less good and and actual information about Rails in our native language.

    So, don’t feel offended. But i’m sure, if you show interest, someone will also produce english magazines.

    Wow he lives in my town. Steinfurt! I think I’ll ask if I may visit the team. Would be really cool.

  16. Matthias Wessendorf on 18 Dec 17:25:

    it is a very good and interesting magazine.

    Thats a great news and ofcourse great initiative. I would love to see english version of the same magazine. Would be happy to promote it in my country (India).
