Official Mailing List Move

Posted by rick August 19, 2006 @ 12:19 AM

Don’t worry if you see some mailing list subscriptions in your inbox, we’re simply transferring everything to Google Groups. This takes the incredible load off the Ruby on Rails server so it can focus on Trac, and gives everyone a Google-powered search engine for the archives. Atom feeds are also available if that’s your preference. Here are the new Google Groups:

Hey everyone, lets give the new rubyonrails-security list a warm welcome. It is an announcement-only list spawned from the lessons learned during the recent security incident.

By the way, it’s possible to subscribe to a Google Group without a Google account.

I really wish when you moved the subscriptions over you kept the subscriber’s message preference…

“The owner of the group has set your subscription type as “Email”, meaning that you’ll receive a copy of every message posted to the group as they are posted.”

Is what I saw in the notice message, when on all the rails lists I’m on I get the digest version.

I’ve tried subscribing and setting to “No Email”, and unsubscribing, and I keep getting individual emails.

What’s up, is something going on with the transition?

    hey guys

Sending out an email or two with the subject:

[ANN] THIS GROUP IS TRANSFERRING TO GOOGLE GROUPS!!

might’ve been nice to have a few days ago, just so we’d have a warning to modify our filters.

but hey, I’m all for being able search easily w/i google groups.

    Worst. Mailing List Move. EVER!

I was wondering why I had all these emails :P Thought maybe a server blew up.

  5. Marc on 19 Aug 06:06:

Agree—it would have been much, much better to warn list members about this before doing it, and not just for updating filters.

Google Groups are great. Easy for users to manage preferences; RSS feeds available; easy to reply to messages even when you get daily digests.

I read lists via gmane and no email. I bet I’m not the only one. This was the worst way you could’ve done the move. No warning here first and dropping personal settings.

  8. Simon on 19 Aug 07:45:

On the plus side it will be so much easier to search now. I no longer have to use valuable gmail space indexing these messages :)

Don’t forget Google is evil though!

  9. Martin on 19 Aug 10:44:

While I am also OK with the change (the search is nice for people not using GMail), a note on the lists (even afterwards) would have been nice. I did not know wtf was going on. If it was a legit “change message” or someone setting up parallel lists or a gateway or whatever.

    And more importantly:

How come, someone could subscribe me to a group at Google Groups without my consent? No opt-in? Isn’t that a spammer’s wet dream, messaging infrastructure for free?

  10. Jeremy on 19 Aug 11:20:

Can you add an announce list? I find the heavy traffic on talk makes it difficult to track announcements.

    thanks!

  11. Andrew Disley on 19 Aug 12:58:

Yeah a heads up would of been handy, a move to Google for the search is going to be really helpful.

    Needs More Cowbell :\

(ditto Rob Sanheim on the ANN)

  13. Jon on 19 Aug 16:35:

Woah, it really screwed up all the filters I had setup. I agree, a little heads up notice would have been nice here. No harm done though, and getting trac up and running is super important.

  14. Don Park on 19 Aug 22:00:

Please add an announce list for new versions of rails etc.. Filtering only lists.rubyonrails.com for [ANN] worked okay but the new ruby-talk gmail list seems to have dropped the [LISTNAME] convention.

  15. James on 19 Aug 22:09:

I was just thinking to myself the other day that it would be nice if Rails was using Google Groups. Nice move.

  16. Andreas on 19 Aug 22:14:

This was not a very good way to do the move, but the reactions by some people on the mailing list are absolutely disgusting.

  17. Bart Braem on 20 Aug 07:56:

Could you please fix the connection with Gmane? It was really nice to read all messages in a news reader, they have good archives and RSS feeds. I think they just need a mail from one of the list admins that you changed the lists…

    Thanks a lot, Bart

Any way to sign up for this weblog as an rss feed or something?

I think communication from the rails team is somewhat lacking.

Signing up here should hopefully mediate some of that, but i agree that an on-list announcement would have been appropriate, for instance.

    Isak

PS: remember to update the ‘mailing list’ entry on <http: />.

  19. random8r on 20 Aug 11:01:

Heya… just wondering if the security things will be posted everywhere else as well (including here?) or do I specifically need to join that list?

  20. Rob on 20 Aug 18:59:

We can’t subscribe via e-mail to the “Security” list, this frigging sucks.

    Hello,

The group you attempted to subscribe to is moderated, and therefore can not be subscribed to by email.

Isak: in the navigation, under Syndicate, there is a link to the “articles” feed.

  22. Vlad on 20 Aug 22:57:

Yes, please fix the Gmane problem! Or maybe is it possible to read/post in google grouops via NNTP?

Too bad Rails can’t have its own list service. It would produce so much more capital in the world’s perception.

Since you have to outsource the list service, must it use the services of corrupt company? Google suppresses information in China and helps to put heroic dissidents in jail.

It’s bad karma and Rails should stay away from it. After all, what’s the point of a new approach to web development if the heart and soul of the developer is still stuck in the wheel of suffering? It only amounts to a faster way to hell, if you ask me.
