RailsConf 2006: June 22-25, Chicago

Posted by David November 27, 2005 @ 05:49 PM

The long-rumoured RailsConf is a reality. We’ve just launched the website and finally announced the dates and place. It’s going down in the lovely Chicago Summer on June 22nd through 25th. There are a lot of details yet to be determined, but Dave Thomas and myself are already lined up to keynote.

Further details will soon trickle in. Such as how to propose a talk and naturally how to sign up for the event. We’re most likely going to cap the attendance to a hard 400. So if you don’t want to miss RailsConf like a lot of people missed RubyConf (which was capped at 200), you’d probably do be well-advised to stay alert on the opening of registrations.

Expect the registration fee to be around $350-400. So if you need to start saving, do that.

Any chance that this conference could be done in OpenSpace? I’d really like to get together with other railers … AND ever since I attended my first OpenSpace conference, I’ve been pretty reluctant to go back to the legacy of the present-from-the-pulpit conference style.

    great site, who’s responsible?

pedro said “great site, who’s responsible?”

Sam Stephenson did the design for the site

$400 seems steep after registering for SXSW for only $250..

Either way, I’ll be there. Sounds like a great time!

The registration fee seems a bit too high for the average programmer. A suggestion: Have companies sponsor the event and pass the cost on to them.

holy sh*t!!! $400 for what?! does that price include the hotel and meals? or did David mean 400 Danish krones?

  7. Cactus on 28 Nov 15:45:

$400 includes a job offer in a location of your choice :)

$400 doesn’t seem bad at all. Its 4 days of conference. That’s $100 a day and considering that it’ll be 6-8 hours long, that’s only about $12-16 an hour for professional advice. A bargain if you ask me.

Consider the cap of 400 people at $400 a person. That’s only $160,000 to put on a 4 day conference at a hotel and pay for all the speaker/instructors expenses?

Seriously, compare that with the O’Reilly conferences that range anywhere from $1,500 – $2,000. $400 ain’t that bad.

Is there going to be beer and strippers?

  10. Lasse on 28 Nov 23:09:

Smigley asked, “Is there going to be beer and strippers?”

I’m afraid the latter depends on the former and, I’m also afraid it’s not necessarily a good thing…

Nice site, Ruby on Rails really seems to have a lot of potential. I’ll probably be interested in participating in this conference and it will be interesting to hear what you guys have to say.

    Strippers +1

I hope you can reconsider 400, with cost of flight and lodging for 4 days it will be a total 1000-1500 for the trip (if not more).

also, just got an email form oreilly, they have a conference coming up that is $350 at highest rate, which is still cheaper than this one

“class << self” haha! Good one! :D

    cough-rubyconf was $125-cough

$400 for a 4-day technology conference is a good deal. We just had a 3-day Java conference here in Seattle for $700, and I thought THAT was a pretty good deal. These things cost money.

If it was closer I’d happily put up the $400 for the opportunity to go.
